Een loterij ‘hacken’: dat moet toch onmogelijk zijn zou je denken. Een gepensioneerde Amerikaan heeft echter het tegendeel bewezen. Voor het ‘hacken’ van de loterij gebruikte de 79-jarige Jerry Selbee echter geen computer of special software. Nee, hij vogelde een handige manier uit waarmee hij de loterij kon ‘hacken’.
Deze manier bestond alleen maar uit het kopen van loten, heel veel loten. En dit heeft de gepensioneerde Amerikaan absoluut geen windeieren gelegd. Het ‘hacken’ van de loterij heeft hem namelijk een bedrag van 13,8 miljoen dollar (ruim 11 miljoen euro) opgeleverd.

Investeren in tickets
Een loterij ‘hacken’ door niets anders te doen dan voor honderdduizenden euro’s aan tickets kopen. Het lijkt op het eerste oog geldverspilling. In de Cash WinFall-loterij, een loterij uit de Amerikaanse staat Massachusetts, bleek het zelfs uiterst lucratief. Wanneer de jackpot de 2 miljoen dollar bereikte en niemand gewonnen had, werden de uitbetalingen naar beneden bijgesteld. Kortom: er waren dus verschillende geldprijzen te winnen en de kans daarop was ook nog eens groter. Zeker wanneer je genoeg geld investeerde om tickets te kopen.
Uitvoerige onderzoek
Voor het investeren van grote geldbedragen in tickets, heeft meneer Selbee uitvoerig onderzoek gedaan. Hij ontdekte dat de jackpot in de Cash WinFall-loterij bijna nooit viel. In de 769 trekkingen die er tot dat moment geweest waren, was de jackpot nog maar tien keer gevallen. Om de jackpot te winnen, moest iemand zes goede getallen hebben. De kans hierop was dusdanig klein, dat de jackpot vrijwel nooit viel.
Bij de volgende trekking werd de jackpot gesplitst in meerdere ‘kleinere’ geldbedragen. De prijs per lot bleef gewoon twee dollar. Meneer Selbee kwam aan het rekenen en besefte al snel dat een lot eigenlijk meer waard was dan twee dollar wanneer de jackpot niet gevallen was. Zeker in de week nadat de jackpot van 2 miljoen niet gevallen was. Het enige wat je in dat geval moest doen, was genoeg loten kopen.
GS Investment Strategies LLC
Jerry Selbee had inmiddels ontdekt dat zijn strategie werkte. Hij hield zelfs een positief resultaat over aan de tactiek. Om er zoveel mogelijk aan te verdienen, richtte hij zijn goksyndicaat GS Investment Strategies LLC op. Maar toen kwam in 2015 het bericht naar buiten dat de Cash WinFall-loterij er in hun eigen staat Michigan mee stopte.
Einde van de hele strategie zou je denken, maar niets was minder waar. Een medewerker van het goksyndicaat van Selbee kwam er namelijk achter dat de Massachusetts-versie van de loterij namelijk precies dezelfde werking had. De strategie bleef dus hetzelfde, alleen werd hier nu een andere loterij voor gebruikt.
Een dagje ‘shoppen’
Om de loten voor de Cash WinFall-loterij in Massachusetts te kopen, reden Jerry en zijn vrouw Marge meer dan 1100 kilometer. Althans, dat deden zij in de week nadat de jackpot niet gevallen was. Zij togen naar Springfield en splitsten hier op.
Beiden waren zij hier ruim 12 uur bezig met het aanschaffen van tickets voor de eerstvolgende trekking. En dat resulteerde in forse investeringen. Op sommige dagen gaven ze allebei meer dan 600.000 dollar uit aan de tickets. Hiervoor hadden ze allebei meer dan 300.000 tickets om mee te spelen.
Strategie onderzocht
Om het effect van de tactiek van het Amerikaanse koppel te onderzoeken, voerde The Boston Globe een aantal berekeningen uit. Hieruit bleek dat het wel degelijk een effectieve manier was om op een makkelijke manier aan je geld te komen.
Uit de berekeningen bleek namelijk dat iedereen die voor meer dan 100.000 dollar aan tickets voor de loterij kocht in de week nadat de jackpot niet gevallen was, in feite gegarandeerd was van winst.
Schandaal
Toen de tactiek van meneer en mevrouw Selbee eenmaal naar buiten kwam, werd het direct bestempeld als groot schandaal. Als gevolg hiervan werd er onderzoek verricht door de autoriteiten van de staat Massachusetts. Het onderzoek wees uit dat de loterij fouten maakte en dat er regels werden overtreden door Jerry en Marge Selbee en andere groepen die deze tactiek hanteerden.
Desondanks werd het niet als een probleem gezien. Dat er groepen zijn die grote hoeveelheden loten kopen, verkleint de kans van andere spelers om te winnen immers niet. Althans, dat was de uitkomst van het onderzoek.
Kortom: het echtpaar Selbee deed dus niets fout.
